  7.     Readers of romance fiction are a determined lot. They made
  8. Rosamunde Pilcher's September No. 1 on the New York Times'
  9. best-seller list two weeks before its publication date. "I was
  10. absolutely astounded," says Pilcher, 65, the author of 1988's
  11. The Shell Seekers, which has sold more than 3 million copies.
  12. Pilcher lives in Scotland, the setting for September, and is
  13. already plotting her 15th novel. When it's done, she'll return
  14. to writing short stories because, she says, "they are more
  15. satisfying. It's so quick. It's like having an affair instead of
  16. getting married."
